Spoilsport - 28 September, 2006

Written by Trip Director - Andrew Sutherland
With good tides and fair winds this week's trip started in spectacular fashion with 40m visibility at Challenger Bay, and a fabulous afternoon and night dive at the world famous Cod Hole - there are few sites in the world where you are accompanied by white-tip reef sharks and five foot long potato cod at night! What a way to start - and it just got better; three manta rays and three silver-tip sharks out at Osprey Reef at Round the Bend and a great show at the shark feed at North Horn, with 20+ gray reef sharks, dog tooth tuna and six hammerhead sharks up in the shallows! With all the usual suspects also making an appearance - trevally, barracuda, turtles, mackerel, scorpion fish, and lion fish, it was a fabulous three days of diving... all wrapped up in great fashion by the 'Aussie' BBQ and party night.

After the planes land 10 new passengers join our adventure. All amazed by the low-level Great Barrier Reef flight and the view of the reefs they are about to dive. All aboard and we are away. A dive at the world famous Cod Hole and Challenger Bay were first on the list.. an eventful day. Day 2 and we start at Two Towers with loads of fish, turtles, and even 3 eagle rays cruised on past. The olive sea snakes are still as friendly as ever. An open deck at Pixie Pinnacle and an afternoon at Pixie Garden with cuttle fish laying eggs and leafy scorpion fish and its beautiful corals. The third day of our diving adventure we went to Andy's Postcard to find rhinopias the over to Steve's Bommie and to round the trip off with it s amazing marine life.

Another BBQ and the trip overnight back to Cairns... regretfully ended another great trip. THanks to the great American Diving Group for a great week and lot of fun.

The passengers arrive, full boat, a big group from America and a family of Aussies.. the makings of a fun trip. We start our diving adventure at the Cod Hole and had a cod attraction, the divers got a good look at these big fish as well as the rest of the spectacular marine life. Over to Challenger Bay for a swim in a fish bowl with the amount of schooling fish there amazing. An overnight run to Osprey Reef and the more serious diving. The highlight of the day was the 4 manta rays that hung around at Around The Bend and allowed divers close up looks at these magnificent creatures. Our afternoon dive was at Admiralty Anchor with its caves, swimthroughs, sharks and marine life. The second day at Osprey Reef we did a one way dive from the tenders back to Spoilsport.

After a magnificent lunch it was time to feed the sharks... an interesting feed with loads of gray reef sharks and a very inquisitive silver-tip. A BBQ and drinks that night then off to Lizard Island to drop some of the passengers off and go for a wonder around the island for the 7 day passengers.

Thanks for coming Team Australia and Team USA.

Lizard Island … one lot of great people leave and another arrive. After settling on board Spoilsport we were away to the world famous Cod Hole. A bit of current started at the end of the first dive so we thought for the second dive we’d use it by doing a drift dive on the Cod Wall where there was loads of marine life and plenty to see. In no time we were back at the Cod Hole where there was less current and things felt like they were flying past.

We were then off to Challenger Bay for the night dive and a morning dive the next morning also, this is a great place and very diverse. The rest of the day was spent at Pixie Pinnacle and Pixie Garden . Day three we started out at Andy’s Postcard and the chase for the elusive lacy scorpion fish. Then over to my favourite site, Steve’s Bommie. The marine life and the critters on this site always amaze me.

We finished the expedition at Flare Point and an easy swim through beautiful coral gardens. Party night and a BBQ and home to Cairns that night. What a great adventure.

28 guests arrived for this adventure on the reef. After the introductions and a bit of a look around Spoilsport we were away. First stop the world famous Cod Hole with its family of giant potato cod and its cousins the flowery cod. We had a fun drift dive at the Cod Wall with everybody enjoying the leisurely swim and an afternoon and night dive at Challenger Bay .

The weather was not the best and the passengers agreed not to head-out to Osprey Reef and opted for the more sheltered Ribbon Reef. Day two – first dive we were lucky to see a manta ray at a cleaning station. Lighthouse Bommie produced its array of critters: octopus, mantis shrimp, nudibranchs and lion fish. The afternoon dive was spent at Westend with its beautiful coral formations. Day three we spent the morning at a newly dived site called 2 Towers where we had five eagle rays swim past, Queensland groupers and olive sea snakes all still very inquisitive of divers and loads of marine life… a great find! Over to Paddy’s Market with loads of juvenile fish in schools. To finish the diving we did a drift dive at Dynamite Pass with turtles, sharks, and manta rays.

A BBQ that night at Lizard Island and on Monday morning most of our passengers flew back to Cairns on a low-level Great Barrier Reef flight over some of the reef they had just dived.

Brian Hirakami, USA. "Variety of dive sites and sea life." *Amazingly Brian met his dive buddy, George, whom he dived with 20 years ago in Cozumel, Mexico, on this expedition. Neither knew the other were traveling on board Spoilsport.

Rata Pawson, Australia. "The dive sites, the crew being so professional, friendly and ensuring all our dives were safe, all the other passengers were great. Our 3rd trip and definately not our last! Special touch was the sparkling wine for our honeymoon."
Terri Chamberlin & Chris Amenson, USA. "Extra effort staff, at all levels, made to make us comfortable. For example; skipper Larry guided two of our dives. Detailed dive briefings and guided dives."

With the usual great weather conditions and 26 passengers from a variety of countries we set off on our Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea adventure with high expectations of great diving and lots of fun to be had - and no one was disappointed.

After 30m visibility at the world famous Cod Hole and some amazing fish action on the night dive at Challenger bay we headed out to Osprey reef for 2 days diving. Manta rays, a large hammerhead shark, schools of bump head parrot fish, and large dog tooth tuna were seen and with over 25 gray reef sharks and white-tip reef sharks turning up at the shark feed these two days of diving proved to exceed all expectations. Then it was back to Lizard Island to pick up a couple more passengers before 3 more great days of diving as we headed down the Ribbon Reefs.

After some close encounters with a number of friendly potato cod at the Cod Hole, the list of other amazing critters we saw on the Ribbon reefs was fantastic: leaf scorpion fish, stone fish, flame file shells, and a number of pipe fish species to name just a few. Steve's Bommie on the final day was a huge hit, with schools of blue lined snapper and big eye trevally and gray reef sharks hanging in the current.

Thanks to all from the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and Russia for making this once again a great trip.
