Expedition Volunteer Program and Application

This is a rewarding dive industry experience program. You receive two dives a day, accommodation whilst onboard and great meals.

As a representative of Mike Ball Dive Expeditions (MBDE) you will be enhancing our service. We expect a high standard in appearance and attitude.

This program is operated in accordance with the Australian Immigration Departments policy on volunteers and visitor work rights. Expedition volunteers do not qualify to receive any payment including tipping.

Two volunteer positions are available per expedition: ‘Domestic’ and ‘Dive Deck’. Positions are for a 2 week period with the second week dependant upon your suitability.
   
Domestic Duties:
- Daily 10 hours work,
- Cabin service: make beds, general tidy,
- Assist cleaning staff,
- Assist catering staff,
- Domestic duties as required.
Dive Deck Duties:
- Daily 10 hours work,
- Assist dive staff (deck preparation),
- Dive with guests,
- Lookout duties as required,
- Domestic duties as required.
   
Pre-requisites:
- Working permit (upon acceptance must complete Authority to Obtain Details of Work Rights Status),
- Insured Dive Master (dive deck volunteer) or are a certified Open Water Diver with a minimum of 15 logged dives (domestic volunteer),
- Pay a refundable $250 deposit to guarantee your embarkation,
- Purchase: uniform shirts, hire gear, and evacuation insurance,
- Supply: navy blue dress shorts and closed footwear,
- Be medically fit without disability and able to participate in moderately heavy duties & assist in an emergency if required,
- Speak English,
- Be aware no work cover or other insurance will cover you in case of an accident.

Itinerary  
Passengers Embark Thursday 7pm - Trinity Wharf, Cairns.
Passengers Disembark Thursday 8am - Trinity Wharf, Cairns.
Duration 2x 7 night 'Coral Sea Safari' expeditions = 2 weeks.
   
Costs  
$54 2x uniform shirts.
$16 DAN Evacuation Insurance (30 day coverage).
50% off web rates Gear Hire.
   
Uniform  
Boarding & Departure White shirt, navy dress shorts, closed footwear.
Evenings Clean and tidy appearance (no singlets), 'Party' shirt for BBQ night.
Other Times Blue shirt, clean and presentable shorts.

Preparation
- Wednesday prior to 2pm or Thursday prior to 10am complete paperwork and payment at MBDE Office. Dive volunteers complete‘Open Book’ Dive Procedure Exam,
- Thursday 12 midday board Spoilsport located at Trinity Wharf.

Requirements:
- Must be a non-smoker,
- Complete Safe Diving Procedure Form and Application Form,
- Unless Aust/NZ resident, complete Authority to Obtain Details of Work Rights Status to confirm valid work permit,
- Provide copy of dive certification (DM or other level with minimum 15 logged dives inc. night dive),
- Provide copy of resume, or dive centre referral,
- Purchase DAN Evacuation Insurance ($16/30 days), or provide details of own,
- Purchase 2 crew shirts ($54). Must also have navy shorts and closed footwear,
- Pay refundable $250 (forfeited if cancelled within 7 days of departure),
- Pay for rental gear if required (50% off web rates),
- Complete 'Open Book' Dive Procedure Exam (dive volunteers only).

Conditions:
- Dates requested will be held for no longer than 7 days without deposit,
- Cancellations < 7 days prior to departure forfeit $250,
- Deposits may be forfeited if you are unable to fulfill your scheduled commitment,
- MBDE reserve the right to cancel volunteer positions within one week prior to embarkation, and if participant is for any reason unsatisfactory,
- Volunteers must contact the MBDE office one week prior to embarkation to check availability and confirm departure,
- Duration is for a 2 week period with the second trip dependent upon suitability,
- This program is operated in accordance with the Australian Immigration Departments policy on volunteers and visitors work rights. You do NOT receive any payments including tipping,
- You are not covered by work cover or other accident insurance.
