Minke Whale Season, Slower than Normal Start!
Unfortunately the minke whales arrived a week late this year. The higher than normal ocean temperature caused by the combined effect of Global Warming and the Al Nino probably caused the minke whales later arrival.
This is our 21st season of conducting swim with minke whale expeditions with James Cook University and unfortunately this has been the first year when the minkes have arrived late. Considering we are relying on nature which humanity has interfered with the success rate is still close to 100%.
The predicted El Nino frequency is one in 10 years. The warmer water that may have delayed the minkes arrival this year is unlikely to be replicated in the less than 10 years.

The night dive at Gothem City was so cool! All the predator fish were going crazy!
5 hour interaction with these majestic animals.
At Ribbon Reef #10 we enjoyed a staggering 5 hour interaction with these majestic animals. It was the 3rd day in a row we woke up to see dwarf minke whales swimming laps of Spoilsport. Other expedition highlights included a large pack of well-behaved grey reef sharks swirling amongst the night divers at Gotham City while at Lighthouse Bommie olive sea snakes were engrossed in a love-in while displaying their courtship and mating behaviours. Combined with great visibility, this was an unforgettable expedition for guests and crew.
