Snorkeling with minke whales is the best thing, especially first thing out of bed!
Repeat minkes make an appearance!
From the dive deck, Kiana Saltarelli, July 6 – July 13
This week saw the repeat of several minkes, including Bento; who has returned to these waters for eleven years! Overall, more than sixty individual minke whales were identified and they displayed an enormous amount of courtship behaviour. An olive sea snake also joined the minkes on the surface. Three humpback whales finished the week with a show of breaching and tail slaps!

The Last Minke Whales
From the Great Barrier Reef – Mike Ball, July 13-20
It was the end of the minke season, I had been drifting with 10 whales for hours. The whales must have sensed it was their last chance to have some fun … the crew began hauling me in. I looked underwater and could hardly believe that 5 of the whales had swam, in formation below me, back to Spoilsport. The minkes looked as sad as I felt!

Sharks, mantas and the Great Barrier Reef!
From the dive deck, Oliver Garland, July 20 – July 27
Over the week, a variety of interesting creatures were seen, including hammerheads and manta rays at Osprey reef and minke whales and wobbegong sharks on the Great Barrier Reef. Cuttlefish laying eggs were a highlight of several dives and an ornate ghost pipefish made an appearance on an early morning dive. Crackerjack was the overall favourite site of many divers.

Very sharky and the last minke
From the dive deck – by Jelle Kolet July 27 – August 3
Between 60 and 100 sharks were seen on the Western wall at Osprey reef. That in combination with the stunning colours of the fans and soft corals made for a spectacular dive.
Probably the last minke whale of the season treated divers at Steve’s Bommie with a surprise visit making the sundrenched day even better.
